Passengers - Trailer Review

Director: Morten Tyldum
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburn

Space. Jennifer Lawrence. Chris Pratt. Those utterances alone are enough to get any film fan excited for a movie release.Yes, Passengers stars two of Hollywood's most popular leading actors; one an Academy Award darling and the other a recent titan in the realm of franchises with roles in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. Whilst the pairing of these powerhouses has attracted enthusiastic attention, Lawrence's and Pratt's pay packages for the picture that has been widely covered in the media has somewhat overshadowed the integrity of the film. Nevertheless, this could not diminish the hype and titillation surrounding the project, and with the Christmas release steadily edging closer, fans were anxious (myself included) for the trailer to drop. Now that it finally has, was it worth the wait?

The trailer's first forty seconds establish a futuristic setting and society, with elaborate and evolved production design. Oh, and with a less impressive and significantly less cute spin-off of BB-8, as Pratt's Jim controls the device to ask Lawrence's Aurora on a dinner date. Flash forward to their date and the cliched lines of initial flirtation and mutual appreciation of each others preened appearances, "You clean up pretty good yourself." Sparks fly as Jim gazes adoringly at his date as she teases Jim about not asking her out sooner to their dutiful bartender, a glossy looking Michael Sheen. Thus far, it seems like a dystopian rom-com. The Aurora asks the typical first date get-to-know-you question, "So why did you give up your life on Earth?" Ah! The plot thickens! Michael Sheen scoots away, revealing a mechanical lower body - sweet Christmas!

Through Aurora's exposition that overlays stunning visuals that heighten the space cruise-ship vibe, we learn of the circumstances as to why they are seemingly the only passengers aboard the Avalon. Everybody else is tucked up soundly in their pods whilst an error resulted in Jim and Aurora being woken ninty years prematurely from their hibernation. Not ideal. Matters only go from bad to worse as the Avalon is plunged into darkness. The ship begins to careen into a fiery mass. Robo-Sheen malfunctions and glasses himself right in the moneymaker. And it all comes down to Jim and Aurora to save the day and preserve the lives of the remaining hibernating passengers. But of course, there's always time for a quick snog as the pair lock lips and make star-crossed lover esque declarations, "If you die, I die!"

The increasingly high-octane edit shows the destruction that the ship's technical glitch has caused as our hero's lives are thrown into mortal peril, donning slick space suits and looking like sexier versions of Buzz Lightyear in the process. As the trailer reaches its crescendo, Jim professes with his voice full of guilt, "There's something I have to tell you...there's a reason we woke up early." Perhaps Jim has cause to fear Aurora's wrath as well as the potential obliteration he may face...

So; was the trailer for Passengers worth the tortuous wait? Oh, yes. With people already calling Passengers "Titanic in space!", the comparisons are hard to discredit - but with Titanic grossing over $2 billion, Sony are surely hoping that Passengers will achieve even a slither of the 1997 epic's success. And with Lawrence and Prat, two massive box-office draws, front and centre, big bucks and maybe even Oscar glory are firmly within grasp.
